DIY Disinfecting Wipes

533 Flares 533 Flares ×

I am a huge fan of removing store bought cleaning products from the home.

The only cleaners we ever really use are vinegar, baking soda, lemon, and borax.

But there is one conventional cleaning product that I thoroughly enjoy- Disinfecting Wipes. It isn’t their actual cleaning power that I like, but rather, their convenience.

If there is a mess anywhere in the house, all you need to do is pull out a wipe. But this product is just so wasteful, all of it- wipes and container- are intended for one use. Meaning I’m buying something to throw it out.

So as I ventured through my house this weekend looking for my next DIY project, I decided it was long overdue that I find an alternative to this convenient cleaning product.

Total time:

Convenient disinfecting wipes without all the harsh chemicals and waste.
Ingredients
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 cups white vinegar
  • 2 T. lemon
  • 2 t. Borax
  • Pieces of fabric
Instructions
  1. Combine the first 4 ingredients in a jar.
  2. Replace the lid and shake to combine.
  3. Add the fabric pieces one at a time until they are all submerged in the jar.
  4. To use: remove fabric from jar, ring out excess disinfectant, and wipe. Toss in the washer when finished and remake the solution once the jar is empty.
Notes
If you’ll be keeping this on your counter, you could also add some of the lemon’s peel for a pop of color.

*Keep in mind I have not had my counter tops scientifically tested. Follow the links if you are interested in more information on natural cleaning or the disinfecting properties of vinegar.

And it’s that easy. Convenient DIY disinfecting wipes without the harsh chemicals and all the waste all in under 5 minutes!

What are your favorite convenience cleaning products?

What kind of cloth do you recommend using? Old t-shirts, wash clothes, cloth diapers? I am anxious to make some of these wipes! Thanks for the idea.

I used an old dish towel that I cut into strips. Old t-shirts or wash clothes would work as well. I’m not familiar with cloth diapers but those could work also. I think almost any fabric that doesn’t leave much lint would work well, but I’d personally go for giving something old a new life. Enjoy!

I am making this for my daughter! She is always using those wipes, and I tell her how wasteful it is. Now I have the recipe for it, thank you! Do you mind if I share it on my blog with the link back to you? Thanks again, and now I’ll get busy making it.
