I have your next garden read!
It is exactly what you need to carry your gardening enthusiasm through the winter months. It’s filled with fresh new ideas to get more out of your spaces and will leave you inspired to plan out your Spring 2014 garden long before February rolls around.
Margaret Park, author of More Food from Small Spaces, kindly offered to share her new book with me. When she contacted me, I was excited because I thought it would be perfect for aspiring urban homesteaders.
After finishing the book, I’ve discovered it is so much more. More Food from Small Spaces isn’t just a tutorial on gardening. It’s an essential tool for sustainability regardless of the size of your gardening space.
Margaret looks at gardening as a food source, not just a hobby. Her techniques are aimed at maintaining a food source throughout the year, not just in the summer months.
Within the seven chapters of this information packed book, Margaret addresses the basics and encourages you to think about how your garden plans can produce food for your family year round.
Some of the most inspiring pieces of this book are the garden plans she shares. Rather than utilizing the standard rectangular design with designated paths, Mrs. Park and her family utilize a center square plan. Squares are designed to maintain temperature and offer accessibility. Within these square plans, low-maintenance, affordable gardening structures are built to support vertical growth.
Using these basic structures, Margaret constructs a strong frame that easily becomes a winter green house. Along with green house plans, she shares a planting guide and useful watering tools to keep your garden low-maintenance throughout the year.
In my own garden, I have been seriously considering how I will rework next year’s design, after reading More Food from Small Spaces, I will be remodeling these beds after Mrs. Park’s designs.
